Personality

Easy-going. Dedicated. Focused. Pragmatic. Loyal. Sam has never been an easy person to anger, preferring to focus on ways to solve problems than to cause or inflame them. Raised in a single-parent household, she learnt the value of love, compassion and hard work, while remaining grounded. She has a deep respect for her family and for others. Loyal to a fault, she would do anything to protect those she cares about, or those who don’t have anyone to fight for them.

She knows herself; she’s confident, without being cocky. Kind and caring without being insincere. She lives her life for herself, takes pleasure in doing the things she loves and has never felt the need to justify herself, or her choices, to anyone. As a result, she makes a conscious effort not to judge others before understanding their stories or their pasts. She genuinely enjoys the company of others and is a great listener.

Family

Sam was raised by her father, David, with help from his younger sister, Elizabeth, and his parents, Arthur and Amelia. Her mother, Charlotte, left when Sam was only a few days old and Sam has never met her. She’s very close with her father, and her aunt’s family, including her twin five-year old cousins. Moving half-way across the country, and traveling a lot, away from them has been tough, but she makes regular plans to visit them often.

Abilities

As a Guardian, Sam has been granted incredible strength able to lift up to 400 pounds with ease and twice as much before straining from the weight. As a result, her body is extremely durable against physical abuse and she hardly endures physical pain or gain bruises from physical attacks. This does not prevent her from being injured by weapons or brutal blows received from others with superhuman capabilities. She also has the ability to move at greater speeds and with greater agility, as well as heal faster than normal humans.

Alongside her physical abilities, she also has mental powers. Limited Perception allows her to sense the presence of vampires in her immediate vicinity. She also has psychic dreams that grant her the potential to communicate with spirits of former scythe guardians or experience visions of the future. She has limited resistance to magic, being immune to the magic and individual powers of all LOWER LEVEL vampires and magical humans. It does not work against other types of species or upper level vampires or magical humans.

In recent years she’s added to her non-magical toolkit, too, picking up Krav Maga and Jiu-jitsu, continually refining her skills when she has the time. She’s good enough to complete, but has no desire to ever do so. When she fights, she fights to end it quickly, which often means pairing traditional fighting styles with out-and-out brawling.

Sam is very observant. She learnt quickly how to read a room and how to find people who don't want to be found. She's also learnt to mask both skills from the untrained eye. She's found yoga to be an effective way of calming and refocusing herself at the end of the day.

History

Samantha ’Sam’ Grey was born in 2010, and raised in Chicago by her father after her mother left just days after bringing her home from the hospital. She grew up with her father’s stories of her mother - his childhood sweetheart - and the knowledge that if she asked, he would move mountains to find out what happened to her. As much as she enjoyed the stories, Sam knew, even from a young age, where her loyalties lay. Sam had a happy childhood, surrounded by her father’s family who helped raise her while he worked.

Sam loved school, worked hard and made a lot of friends. It helped that she enjoyed the company of most people, and was happy to lend a sympathetic ear to those who needed one. The downside to having a lot of friends was not having any really close friends, something that still happens today. It’s never proved too much of a problem as she hates to be a burden on others and much prefers to be the listener. All that said, once she really gets to know people, she opens up a lot more.

The rest of her adolescence passed by with relatively little of importance to note. She graduated and was quickly engaged to her high school sweetheart, Thomas. Her acceptance of the proposal was one of the few times she had every argued with her father. He wanted her to live her life - experience all the things life had to offer - before she committed herself to anything or anyone. Eventually she (grudgingly) talked him around to accepting her decision, if not loving the idea, and she and Thomas began to make plans for their future wedding, on her condition that they spent time at college first.

It was a decision that proved to be well-considered. Shortly after the start of their second year, they broke off the engagement after growing apart. The split was mutual, and they parted on good terms, and she returned her focus to her studies.

A few months later she was awakened as a Guardian of the Scythe - a revelation that completely redefined her world. Magical and magical creatures were suddenly real and she’d been thrown in the middle of it. Guided by her Whitelighter, Alyson Carter, Sam began her training, learning to control both the physical and mental powers gained from her new status as a Guardian, embracing this strange (and strangely rewarding) new life path. She also learnt to fight and defend herself against vampires.

Despite the dramatic shift in her life, she finished her journalism degree and packed her bags for San Francisco, wanting to put some space between herself and the people she loves more than anything in the world in case her new-found job follows her home.

The small, single-bedroom apartment she rents in San Francisco is now simply a home base for her; the nature of her role as Guardian has seen her travel overseas trying to stem the growth of the vampire population, and she’s become highly proficient at her job, despite the idea of killing anyone - or anything - being completely at odds with her live and let live mentality. She’s seen first hand the damage done by vampires, and she quickly learnt the importance of her role in protecting the lives of innocents.

Lately, she’s found herself in Istanbul and without guidance from Alyson, who’s disappeared. Any dreams she might have had of one day settling down and starting a family have been put on hold. For now.
